Background

The Friday Night School was established in the late 1990s. The program pairs together around 400 students each week - 200 children from migrant and refugee families and 200 student tutors from local schools, mainly Catholic schools, including Sacré-Cœur.

Objective

To promote social awareness among students that impels to action.

Activities

  • Melbourne Sacré-Cœur students visit children of migrant/refugee families each Friday night;

  • Melbourne Sacre-Cœur students provide supervision in  reading, writing and homework to these children, many of whose parents do not speak any English. Each Friday night, for the past decade, about 15 Sacré-Cœur senior school students have been involved in this program.

Outcomes

  • Students have been educated to a critical consciousness that leads them to analyse and reflect on the values of society and to act for justice.

  • Students become active and informed citizens at local level.
